For the grown ups

Keep your fitness up at K2 Gym, just five minutes away. Splash the day away at Waterworld Newquay. Book an indoor or outdoor court at Heron Tennis Centre. Enjoy pony trekking and hacking with Trenance Riding School. Or have a go at just about anything from go-karting to zip-lining at Adrenalin Quarry.

Tackle a tough, undulating course with stunning views at Newquay Golf Club. Bring your bikes, or hire them from Coastal Trail Cycle Hire, to conquer the Camel Trail, an 18-mile, almost traffic-free, level trail along a disused railway line between Wenfordbridge and Padstow.

Walk the South West Coastal Path: the eight-mile Newquay to Perranporth section is doable and delightfully beautiful. Take a two-hour mackerel-fishing or a four-hour deep-sea wreck and reef-fishing expedition with Fish Newquay. Or power yourself over the water with Newquay Kayak Hire – watch out for seals and dolphins.

Learn surfing of the non-internet kind with four-time UK surf champion Adam Griffiths at NQY Surf School, a highly reputable provider with changing room and lockers on Great Western Beach. Try snorkelling or stand-up paddleboarding with Newquay Activity Centre. Or break away from the beach at lovely Trenance Gardens.

Happy hens (and stags)

Newquay is one of Europe’s leading hen and stag venues and all without the hassle of plane travel. Kick off at Wild Spa, home to woodfired sauna, hot tubs and ice baths that combine to create a hot-and-cold-immersion Nordic-Spa experience in one of Cornwall’s most stunning locations.

Enjoy a morning power hour or add some zip to your evening zen with Yoga Garden. Sample a one-of-a-kind al-fresco experience with Dine With Iris, a posh picnicking service that pays the utmost attention to every last petal and napkin. Or dive into a swimming and wellbeing complex that spares no luxury at the Headland Spa.

Ramp up the primal adrenaline with a spot of axe-throwing with The Celtic Tossers. Then keep it flowing at Adrenalin Quarry, with its Wipeout-style aqua park, go-karting, zip wires and open-water swimming. Oh, and keep your fitness up at Newquay’s most central gym, K2, just five minutes’ away.

Make a night of it at Tom Thumb Cocktail Bar. After a tough day at the beach, help yourself to giggle water that includes Bellinis and Kir Royales – or special ‘driving juice’ if you’re behind the wheel. Try Cove 24 for chic dining, Dead Famous for events, Whiskers for great sounds, and Basket for coffee and cake.
