King of the castle

Pop the prosecco, get out on the roof terrace and tell me you don’t feel like the king of the castle. Crown Gate House offers a luxurious, private getaway in the heart of Nottingham’s Castle Quarter for up to a dozen hens, stags, family, besties or colleagues ready to relax, reacquaint and soak up the city from the rooftop hot tub.

Features here are original, including the ground-floor safe and vault room, converted into a luxury bathroom, complete with step-in bath for two, and the interiors showstopping. Kick back on velvet sofas, pour another drink from your own ritzy bar, drift off in six boutique bedrooms to the muffled sounds of the city.

Within striking distance of the buzzing beat of Nottingham’s top bars and restaurants, Crown Gate House invites you to graze away the day at the huge dining table, get together for movie nights in the drawing room, mix a cocktail or three, and dance yourself dizzy to your Bluetooth favourites in the generous spaces.

Outside space here is all about the rooftop. Drink and dine up there on the plush chairs beneath the pergola with the spot lighting or jump into the four-seat hot tub and soak up the city and castle views. Cooking and dining

The swanky kitchen comes in period royal blue with gold touches. It’s a theme that’s carried through, right down to the kettle and toaster. Cook on two ovens and eat around the breakfast bar, the chunky dining table or the rooftop dining area with city views. Or don’t: put your feet up and call Dineindulge for multicultural in-house dining.

But what’s that next to the dining table? It’s the velvet-upholstered in-house bar. Move sweetly from dinner to drinks without leaving the room. And if takeaways are on the menu, consider WOWO, home of great Chinese and bubble tea, Jpingo’s flame-grilled steakhouse, or Indian dining at Chilli’s.

Eating out? There’s no shortage of pubs, gastropubs, bars and restaurants in downtown Nottingham. Close to the castle, head to The Ferry Inn for Chef and Brewer staples such as glazed pork belly and hand-battered cod and chips. Or consider The Ferry Boat Inn with its juicy burgers, hearty pies, beer garden and kids’ play area.

Stroll to Fothergill’s for bistro-style dining served with a side of scenic views. Try The Water’s Edge for chicken tikka masala or a classic full English brekkie. Eat dependable pub fare from Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem, reputedly England’s oldest inn, quality Asian from Kottaram, or sign up for fine dining at Alchemilla or Sat Bains.
