The Wolds Way runs close by. The trails, views and sculptures of Dalby Forest are just a short drive away. Owls and hares dot the fields and red kites duck and dive overhead. Welcome to Crossroad Farm in the Yorkshire Wolds, an oasis of lavish luxury for 16 family, friends, hens, stags or colleagues dropped into a beautifully bucolic bolthole.
Once a grade II-listed farmhouse, Crossroad Farm brings generations together on squishy leather sofas, in bubbling spa waters and around the chunky oak dining table in front of a roaring double-sided woodburner that also warms the beautiful, beamy living room. Get cosy around the telly in the evenings and bring your passwords.
There’s something for everyone here: a barbecue area for tong-wielding cave-dads, slides and swings for youngsters, an enclosed garden for dogs, a freestanding bath with piping-hot water from the biomass boiler for exhausted parents. Explore the Wolds and come home to five-star fun with the best hotel guests in the world.
There are plenty reasons why you’d want to be outdoors at Crossroad Farm. You loaded up the fridge/freezer with goodies from Trotter’s Farmshop, right? All the more reason to spend the evening in the barbecue area. While your steaks are sizzling, play a little table tennis and keep an eye on the kids playing on the swing and slide set.
Settle back in living spaces lavished with love in a sympathetic restoration that retains the grade II-listed beauty of the stairs, doors and sash windows yet adds plenty of modern touches. Get together on the squishy leather sofas for fire-warmed Netflix nights streamed over the fast Wi-Fi using the password you remembered to bring.
Looking to loll around indulgently in some hot bubbles? The indoor party spa will take 12. When you’re fully marinated, it’s time for some eight-ball pool on the table in the living room, or darts in the games room. Raid the landing cupboard for board games. Whatever you’re doing, stay toasty warm, thanks to the biomass burner.
The dining table will take 16, with the pool table close by for youngsters with itchy feet between courses. Or maybe you’d prefer to eat al-fresco in the barbecue area? Either way, you’ll love the bells-and-whistles kitchen and gas barbie. For a special treat, call up our professional friends from At the Dinner Party, By Molly or Willows Catering.
Shop for essentials at Central Stores in Sherburn or take deliveries from all the main supermarkets. Get deli stuff from Sally Middlewood’s, meat from Trotter’s Farmshop, and your fizz from We Love Wine. Takeaway night? Why not? Pizzaland, China China and The East lead the way.
Tuck into Whitby scampi or chicken Parmesan at The Coachman in Snainton. Consider breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea or dinner at The Farrier in Cayton, a five-star establishment that will feed you all day long. Or dig into small plates such as sticky chicken, ox cheek bao buns or Manchego croquettes at FortySix in Malton.
Eat out in the lovely beer garden at The Star Inn in Weaverthorpe or eat traditional Asian favourites at Spice 4 You in Pickering. Head into York for a little table theatre at Casa Brazilian Rodizio, for Mediterranean-Turkish at Yakamoz, or Italian at Buongiorno. Or get serious about gelato at Groovy Moo.
Close by the Yorkshire Wolds Way, the odd red kite swoops in search of prey, but it’s nothing that’ll get in the way of a good night’s rest. Crossroad Farm sleeps up to 16 in seven lovely bedrooms. All but bedroom five come with room for a cot.
